After breaking the €9 billion turnover mark, the Italian packaging industry adds another record to its achievement, with a 6% rise on the 2022 sales.

The accomplishment emerges from initial findings by research centre MECS-Centro Studi di Ucima (Union of Italian automatic wrapping and packaging machine manufacturers).

In contrast to the national market, which is down 14% and recorded a turnover of €1.68 billion, exports are driving the extraordinary performance in the industry, making up 81.3% of the turnover for a value of up to €7.36 billion and translating into a growth rate of 12%.

The most dynamic destination markets are North America, with a growth of 25%, in addition to the European Union, which is up 17%, Asia at +22%, and South America with +31%.

The key products in this success unquestionably include machinery for pharmaceutical packaging, for which MECS forecasts an overall growth of the world market from the current 6.6 billion to € 7.6 billion over the 2023-2027 period.

This giant leap in sales involved the North American market first and foremost, at +4.5%, followed by Asia at +2.7 and the European Union at +2.4%. Coming up behind are non-EU Europe at +1.7%, Africa and Oceania at +1.5%, and South America at +1.4%. Looking at country data, the USA is leading with a rise of 4.6%, followed by India at +4.0%, and Italy and Great Britain, which are up by 3.2 and 3%. The trend in France was negative at -1.1% and Vietnam dropped by 3.1%.

Moving on to explore packaging types, in primary packaging, sealing machines soared with a rise of 3.7%, while in the secondary packaging segment, box form-fill-seal machines recorded the highest growth, at +3.9%.
